Fireflies of the Sea on Holbox Island

Imagine a night when you can’t even see the moon, but when you get close to the water, you will find yourself surrounded by tiny creatures that glow in a light blue or green shade that turns the dark sea into an ocean of little stars. This wonderful phenomenon is called bioluminescence and it is caused by so-called tiny planktons or by another name sea fireflies. The glowing beaches can be found on Holbox Island right across from the Yucatan coast. The first place to swim in bioluminescent water in Holbox is on the south-eastern tip of the island at a beach called Punta Cocos, located a few minutes outside of town. This event occurs every night of the year but is more visible in April and November when the water is warmer.
