Real-Time Updates on the Security Situation in Mexico

Following reports of the killing of drug cartel leader “El Mencho,” unrest has erupted in several areas across Mexico. How does this situation impact travelers arriving in Mexico? We’ve gathered the key information and the latest real-time updates you need to know.

The Killing of Drug Cartel Leader “El Mencho”

During a military operation that expanded in the city of Puerto Vallarta, Mexican armed forces killed one of the world’s most wanted drug lords, Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as “El Mencho,” who led the most powerful drug cartel in the country.

In an official statement, Mexico’s Ministry of Defense confirmed that, in addition to Oseguera, four other cartel gunmen were killed and three were injured. Three members of the security forces were also injured during the operation.

The killing immediately sparked unrest in Puerto Vallarta and in areas controlled by the cartel he led. Mexican media shared images of burning vehicles and roadblocks set up by rioters on highways in the states of Jalisco, Nayarit, Guanajuato, Michoacán, and Tamaulipas.

According to reports, during the riots following the killing of “El Mencho,” cartel members stormed the international airport in Guadalajara, the capital of Jalisco state.

The Current Security Situation in Mexico

At this time, the Governor of Jalisco has called on residents to remain in their homes “until the situation returns to being under control.” In his statement regarding the unrest, the governor said that public transportation services were suspended and urged residents to avoid travel on highways due to “violent incidents” that have spread to at least five areas within Jalisco. Schools have been closed.

There are also numerous videos circulating on social media showing frightened passengers fleeing the area. Media outlets in Mexico reported flight cancellations at the airport serving the country’s second-largest city.

U.S. State Department Guidance

Following the killing of “El Mencho,” the U.S. Department of State has advised American citizens to exercise increased caution. Due to the unrest in Jalisco state, particularly in Puerto Vallarta, there are currently disruptions, flight cancellations, and difficulty accessing airports because of road blockades and ongoing security developments.

The State Department has recommended avoiding the airport areas in Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta unless absolutely necessary and coordinated with airlines and local authorities. It has also advised against non-essential travel within the state of Jalisco and in areas mentioned in previous updates.

Travelers in the affected areas are advised to avoid locations where security operations are taking place, minimize non-essential movement, avoid large gatherings, follow instructions from local authorities, monitor local media, and keep family members informed of their location.

Is Mexico safe right now for tourists?

It is important to put things into context. Many international reports tend to present “Mexico” as a single entity, while in reality it is a vast country with significant differences between regions, similar to the United States. Incidents involving criminal organizations typically occur in specific, targeted areas and are often part of internal conflicts between groups. These situations rarely involve tourists and do not take place inside resort areas.

The main tourism destinations in Mexico’s Caribbean region are located in the state of Quintana Roo, approximately a four-hour flight from Jalisco. At this time, in key destinations such as Cancun, Riviera Maya, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum, everything is operating as usual and there have been no unusual incidents reported. From the Mexican government’s standpoint, no special travel warnings have been issued for this region. Hotels and airports continue operating normally, and the main destinations are welcoming thousands of tourists every day without disruption.

If You Are in Mexico or Traveling Soon - What Should You Do?

As mentioned, everything is currently operating as usual in the main tourist areas. If you are already in Mexico or planning to arrive soon, there is no need to let the situation negatively affect your experience.

News coverage often focuses on the most dramatic aspects and can make the situation seem more widespread than it actually is. While there are issues in certain areas, the Caribbean destinations are not affected.

That said, this is understandably a stressful situation, so here is what we recommend:

Stay alert and aware of your surroundings.

Follow official instructions.

Stay informed.

We completely understand that the headlines can sound alarming, and we would never recommend doing anything that could put our travelers at risk. Your safety is always our top priority. At the same time, it would be unfortunate to cancel plans if the situation does not directly impact your destination. If possible, we suggest waiting a few more days to see how things develop before making a final decision.
