How Much Does a Vacation in Mexico Cost?

That’s a difficult question to answer because it depends on you and what you want out of your vacation in Cancun. The overall cost of your vacation will vary depending on your desired accommodations, length of stay, transportation, time of year, desired activities, food/restaurant choices, and any additional spending on souvenirs or gifts. The most variable costs of your vacation will undoubtedly be your hotel, activities, and transportation (including how you plan to get to Cancun).

Hotels Prices in Cancun

Accommodations will probably be the most variable part of your expenses in Cancun. From budget hostels to luxury, all-inclusive resorts, Cancun has everything on offer. Check out the prices below to get an idea of which options might be a good fit for you:

  • Hostels & Budget Hotels: Hostel prices can range from $40 – $70 per night. You can expect lower prices if you’re getting a bed in a shared room or expect higher prices if you’re looking more at budget hotels with a private room.
  • Chain Hotels: Chain hotels, or mid-range hotels, are those well-known brands and local options you might know from back home. Prices of these hotels can range from $70 – $120 per night. They generally offer more comfortable rooms with more amenities.
  • All-Inclusive Resorts: All-inclusive resorts range in price from $150 – $500 per night. You’ll find these resorts along the beaches, with all services and foods included. The prices will vary on how luxurious the resort is and whether or not alcohol is included in your package.
  • Luxury Resorts & Boutique Hotels: If you’re looking for the most private and exclusive experience, you’ll be wanting a luxury resort or boutique hotel experience. These hotels have the best locations, with the best beachfront properties, amenities, and personalized services. The prices of these hotels can range from $300 – $1,000 and offer the most luxurious options for vacation in Cancun.
  • Vacation Rentals: If you want to have your own private place, you can look into renting a private home or condo in Cancun. There are not standardized prices, since properties have various sizes, different locations, and amenities. Generally, you can expect prices to range from $100 – $500 a night.

As always, keep in mind that these prices are estimates. They will vary throughout the year, depending on when you want to go to Cancun. Where you want to stay will also be impacted by how many people you are traveling with and whether you want to stay together. For example, vacation rentals can sometimes be more cost effective for large groups than everyone getting individual hotel rooms. Depending on what type of accommodations you want, level of privacy and convenience, you can expect prices to vary widely.

Prices of Attractions and Activities in Cancun

While you’re in Cancun, you’ll probably want to spend some of your time exploring the area and doing activities.

  • Water activities & Jet Skiing: Cancun is known for amazing water activities. With snorkeling, jet skiing, scuba diving, parasailing and more, there are plenty of options to enjoy. Prices for these activities range from $30 – $150, depending on the duration and what you’re interested in.
  • Yacht Cruise to Islas Mujeres: If you’re interested in seeing Isla Mujeres, this can be accomplished through a tour or a simple ferry ride, which can range in cost from $20 – $30 per person. Keep in mind that doesn’t take into account other activities or food you might buy on the island.
  • Nightlife Downtown: There are several famous options for nightlife in downtown Cancun. From Coco Bongo to the City, there’s always somewhere to go downtown. You can expect cover charges and drink prices to vary. Cover charges can range from $0 – $20 and drink prices can vary from $5 – $15.
  • Cenote Tour: There are beautiful natural sinkholes near Cancun, which were sacred to the Mayans. They are still a wonderful site to see with a tour from Cancun. If you can get to the park on your own though, expect fees to range from $5 – $25 or more, if you have a guided tour.
  • Mayan Ruins Tours: Cancun is near several Mayan ruins sites. If you’re interested in seeing the ruins, you can get a guided tour from Cancun. Group tours can cost as little as $40, with private tours costing more. Keep in mind some tours don’t include entry fees to the parks, so you’ll need to budget for that.

Cancun Transportation Prices

How you get around in Cancun will impact the cost of your vacation overall! There are different types of transportation available in Cancun. Planning out the kind of transportation you want to use will help you budget properly for your day to day expenses during your Cancun vacation.

  • Ferries: If you want to get to Isla Mujeres, you might consider taking the ferry. You can expect prices for the ferry to vary between $10 – $15 each way.
  • Buses: Buses can be a really good option for tourists trying to get around and cost between $10 – $40, depending on where you want to go. This can be an economical option for getting to other locations you may want to explore, such as Playa del Carmen or Tulum.
  • Colectivos (utility taxis): If you’re traveling light, you might consider taking a colectivo. These are small buses, with around 14 seats, that go to many popular spots. They tend to be quite crowded, so we don’t recommend it if you’re traveling with lots of luggage. However, the price is quite good at $3 – $15 per ride, depending on where you’re going.
  • Taxis: Of course, there are typical taxis available as well. These are a popular option, especially for those just arriving at the airport. If you’re going to downtown Cancun, you can expect a hotel from the airport to be $30 – $50. If you’re going to the typical hotel zone, near the beaches, you can expect the cost to be closer to $40 – $60.
