Discover 6 Essential Tips for an Unforgettable Vacation

If you’re here, chances are you’ve decided to take a vacation to Cancun! Expect to enjoy beautiful beaches, vibrant culture, and lively nightlife! While you’re getting ready for your vacation in Cancun, there are a few things you should keep in mind, while you’re preparing and packing your bags! Keep reading to get into our list of tips!

1

Get prepared before your flight to Cancun

When you’re packing for your trip, don’t forget to get your documents in order! Sometimes you’ll need to show your documents to different officials, so you’ll want to have everything ready. Make copies of your passport, travel insurance, hotel reservations, and plane tickets. These documents will help you check-in for your flights and hotel. Plus, you’ll have all your documents as you go through immigration.

2

Important Info for Entry

When you’re going through immigration, you’ll be given a form to fill out. You’ll want to have the details of your trip handy, while you fill out this form, such as the duration of your trip, flight information, and hotel address. With this form, you can stay in Mexico for up to 180 days. Make sure you store your form in a safe place! There is a $30 fee associated with losing it, so try your best to keep track of it.

As with any travel, you’ll want to make sure you make copies of your passport before you travel. This will give you peace of mind and allow you to not have to carry your passport everywhere for identification. If you’re traveling with others, consider giving someone else in your travel group a copy of your passport too! This can be helpful if you lose or misplace your passport at any point.

Transportation From the Airport

Getting from the airport to your hotel can be one of the most stressful aspects of travel! You arrive and you might be tired or disoriented; it can be difficult to know which transportation option is best. Here are a few of the most typical options to consider:

  • Taxi: If you want to have an easy way to get to your destination, picking up a taxi can be an easy option. There are always taxi drivers waiting at the airport, who can get you to your hotel.|
  • Collectivo: This is a type of small bus, cooperative travel. This is a lower cost than taxis or other options, so it’s good if you’re trying to stay on a budget. However, they are often very full, so it’s not recommended if you have a lot of luggage with you.
  • Car Rental: If you plan to do a lot of exploring during your time in Cancun, a car rental could be a good option for you. There are car rental places at the airport, allowing you to pick it up easily and continue to your destination.
  • Ferry: If you’re planning on going to Isla Mujeres, you’ll need to take a ferry from the ferry station. It’ll be a half hour ferry ride, which will likely cost $15 – $30. Keep in mind that you’ll need to pick another form of transportation to get to the ferry station.
  • Planned Driver Pickup: This is by far the best option for transportation. Arranging transportation in advance allows you to have a dedicated driver waiting for you when you get to the airport.

Accommodations: Book in Advance

To get the best deal on accommodations in Mexico, make sure that you plan in advance! You’ll want to book your accommodations as soon as you can. This will reduce stress during your vacation, especially if you’re on a relatively short trip. If you want to have the flexibility to move around during your stay, make sure you book at least the first location before arriving. This will give you a reliable place to go on your first night and time to plan your next destination.

Please note: hotel prices in Mexico vary depending on hotel occupancy. If you don’t book in advance, you can expect to pay 10 – 20% more for the same accommodations. Always book in advance, if you can!

5

Change Some Currency

You’ll find that credit cards are accepted at many locations in Cancun, including hotels, restaurants, and stores. However, not everyone will readily accept credit cards. For this reason, we recommend that you change some currency, so you have some local currency. The value of a single US dollar varies over time, but is currently around 17 – 19 Mexican pesos per dollar. Depending on what you expect to spend, we recommend you change currency, up to $1500 dollars.

To get the best deals on currency exchange, avoid changing money at the airport or your hotel, since they charge expensive fees. For the best deals, look for a bank or regulated currency exchange service, which tend to have more reasonable rates. You can always use ATMs to withdraw more cash during your trip, if you run out of cash.

6

Get a Local SIM Card or eSIM

To make sure you stay connected and can get around easily, we recommend you get a local SIM card or eSIM. This will allow you to continue to use your cellphone, so you won’t be reliant on wifi to communicate. To get the best deals, don’t buy a SIM card at the airport. Instead, you can get a SIM card at any OXXO store in town. OXXO is a type of mini-market, which is widely available in Mexico. When you buy a SIM card you can load it with credit to use during your stay. If you run out of cell credit, you can always return to the store to reload it.
